Chess Coach – After-School Programs

GMChessPrep is looking for enthusiastic and dependable Chess Coaches to lead after-school chess programs at elementary schools primarily in Fairfax County, Virginia.Compensation
Starting at $50 per class
Please note that coaches should arrive before the scheduled class time for setup and remain briefly afterward for cleanup and student dismissal.
Who We’re Looking For
You may be a great fit for GMChessPrep if you:
- Enjoy working with elementary-age students, typically ages 5–12
- Have a solid understanding of chess and enthusiasm for teaching the game
- Are patient, energetic, responsible, and comfortable managing groups of children
- Are available during weekday after-school hours, generally between 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM
- Have reliable transportation and are comfortable traveling to local schools
- Can commit to a consistent schedule throughout the school session
Your Responsibilities
As a GMChessPrep Chess Coach, you will:
- Lead engaging chess classes for groups of approximately 10–20 students
- Teach chess rules, tactics, strategy, and game concepts appropriate to each group’s level
- Follow GMChessPrep lesson plans and curriculum
- Demonstrate chess positions and concepts clearly and effectively
- Organize supervised practice games and chess activities
- Encourage good sportsmanship, discipline, and respectful behavior
- Manage classroom attendance and student dismissal
- Set up, organize, and properly maintain chess equipment and teaching materials
- Communicate professionally with GMChessPrep staff, school representatives, students, and parents when necessary
Training & Support
GMChessPrep provides coaches with training, curriculum, teaching materials, and ongoing support to help them successfully manage their classes. You do not need to be a titled or master-level chess player. Strong chess fundamentals, the ability to communicate with children, reliability, and a genuine interest in teaching are what matter most.
Schedule
Most programs take place on weekday afternoons during the school year. Coaches with availability on multiple
weekdays may have opportunities to teach additional programs.
